Just started carving stone last month after seeing some of the beautiful material available near me here in Utah.  The material I am using now is Utah Honeycomb calcite.  Its not hard like granite by any means but much harder than alabster or soapstone.  Beautiful stuff.  It can be 3′ thick and be translucent.  I’m off to Colorado in the morning.  I’ll drop some pieces off at Toklat Gallery in Basalt then head over to Marble and get some of their material.
