{"id":63,"date":"2011-06-28T17:50:35","date_gmt":"2011-06-28T17:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/skipbellock.com\/?p=63"},"modified":"2011-07-01T19:08:18","modified_gmt":"2011-07-01T19:08:18","slug":"using-the-arbor-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/?p=63","title":{"rendered":"Tools and Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Arbor Tech is a tool manufactured in Australia.\u00a0 Its simply a 3 cutter rotary grinder that fits on almost any grinder.\u00a0 Spinning at 10,000 rpm this tool and its smaller version the mini-arbor tech can remove vast quantities of wood in a short time and is capable of fine detailing.\u00a0 Its the primary tool I use to scoop out and shape shallow bowls.<\/p>\n<p>The following pictures will give you some idea how to use this tool.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/tools1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-95\" title=\"Tools 1\" src=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/tools1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/tools1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/tools1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\">These                 are the primary weapons in my arsenal.\u00a0 At the top of the                 picture is the Arbor Tech wheel, the second down is the Kutzall                 Extreme medium grit wheel and the coarse <\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\">wheel is on the                 bench.\u00a0 The peach colored wheel is next. I mount all of the                 cutters on Makita 4&#8243; angle grinders.\u00a0\u00a0 And lastly                 this Milwaukee angle head drill fitted with a 3&#8243; hook and                 loop disc holder for sanding.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/tools2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96\" title=\"Tools 2\" src=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/tools2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/tools2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/tools2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\">More                 tools.\u00a0 On the left is a 3&#8243; hook and loop disc holder                 in a Makita angle head drill, Next to it is a Sioux angle head                 drill with a 2&#8243; disc holder mounted in it and last on the<br \/>\nfar right is the Mini Arbor Tech with a small Kutzall grinder                 mounted on a 4&#8243; Makita grinder. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/tools3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-97\" title=\"Tools 3\" src=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/tools3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/tools3.jpg 700w, https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/tools3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\">A                 few more essential items when working with these tools.\u00a0 I                 use a respirator type face mask\u00a0 while working with the                 Arbor Tech itself.\u00a0 This model fits tightly under your chin                 prohibiting the chips from entering your face from the                 bottom.\u00a0Another &#8220;tool&#8221; that is always in the                 corners of these pictures is my burl holding                 devises&#8230;.sandbags.\u00a0 Available at any riverside in the US                 during the spring runoffs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\">While using the other Kutzall tools I frequently                 shift to a dust mask and standard face shield (not shown).\u00a0                 While using the Arbor Tech itself I wear a welding glove on at                 least my left hand as the chips flying back from the tool can                 hurt like H&#8230; and you can see that the welding glove is taking                 a beating. Lastly I advise use of some form of ear                 protection.\u00a0 Loss of hearing due to machine noise is non-reversible                 and a more common problem to woodworkers than maybe we care to                 admit.\u00a0Your wives are not yelling in anger at you&#8230;.just                 frustration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-81\" title=\"The Process 1\" src=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The                 Patient: <\/span>Another beautiful burl.\u00a0 Here the                 decayed area goes to within 1&#8243; of the bottom. Most mass removal is done with the                 cutter in this position.\u00a0 Vertical!\u00a0\u00a0Then the                 grinder is moved left to right (90 degrees to the rotation of                 the wheel).\u00a0 See arrows.\u00a0 When the                 surface is flat (like when you start) that&#8217;s the hardest                 cutting.\u00a0 As the sides of the form slope more towards                 vertical the cutting gets easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-84\" title=\"The Process 4\" src=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess4.jpg 640w, https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess4-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\">The cutter slides down the sloped                 sides ( see arrows) of the form cutting easily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-85\" title=\"The Process 5\" src=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess5.jpg 640w, https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess5-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\">Note that I hold my left arm tight                 to my body for support.\u00a0 When reaching out on the form I                 will lay my left forearm on the piece for additional support and                 steadiness.\u00a0 A frequent question is&#8230;&#8221;how do you hold                 the burl while your working on it?&#8221;\u00a0 I use a very                 hi-tech and expensive system&#8230;sandbags. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess5.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-86\" title=\"The Process 6\" src=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess6.jpg 640w, https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess6-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\">The surface produced by the Arbor                 Tech while doing mass demolition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87\" title=\"The Process 7\" src=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess7.jpg 640w, https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess7-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\">Here                 I&#8217;m using the Arbor Tech in a horizontal position and                 &#8220;sweeping&#8221; or &#8220;brushing&#8221; the surface.\u00a0                 Very little pressure on the tool is used here.\u00a0 This goes a                 long way towards cleaning up the &#8220;chop&#8221; left by the                 mass removal step.\u00a0 Note the sandbags that act like pillows                 under the piece allowing me to move the piece into nearly any                 position.\u00a0 The spikes on the exterior of the burl dig into                 the sandbags fabric and do a great job of holding it. The bags                 should be only about 1\/3 to 1\/2 full.\u00a0 This way they can be                 easily &#8220;fluffed&#8221; up to fit the contours of the burl.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88\" title=\"The Process 8\" src=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess8.jpg 640w, https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess8-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\"> The Kutzall grinding is                 complete and the piece is ready to sand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-92\" title=\"The Process 12\" src=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess12.jpg 640w, https:\/\/skipbellock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/theprocess12-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS;\">Flattening the bottom.
